Seven collaborative research projects in the area of Smart Grids and New Energy Materials have been selected for funding from a total of 53 project proposals under the framework of the 4th NPP call. Call for Proposals in Energy Research

Funded topics:
Indian-European projects in Energy Research, focusing particularly on

  • Smart Energy Grids
  • New Energy Materials

Participating countries:
Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, India, Norway, Portugal, Turkey

Scope of projects:
Projects can have a maximum duration of 3 years and maximum funding is € 150.000 – € 350.000 per partner/country, depending on national regulations.

23rd August 2013 (12:00 /noon Central European Time and 15:30 Standard Indian Time)



For the second time, the New Indigo Partnership Programme (NPP) has teamed up with the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of India to launch a joint call; this time on Energy Research.

The aim of the New INDIGO partnership Programme is to fund high quality research collaborative projects involving European and Indian researchers, and at the same time to lay the basis for continuous STI cooperation and enhanced joint funding programmesbetween Europe and India on a Trans-national level.

Thematic focus

Bearing in mind that the NPP’s primary aim is to reinforce EU-India cooperation in thematic areas of mutual interest and recognising the fact that energy research is a field of rising importance both in India and Europe, the themes for this NPP Call were chosen to be:

  • Smart Energy Grids
  • New Energy Materials

The following partners have agreed to open a call for funding multilateral research projects in the field of energy research:

Belgium - Research Foundation Flanders (FWO)
Finland - Academy of Finland (AKA)
France - OSÉO
Germany - Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)
India - Department of Science and Technology (DST)
Norway - Research Council Norway (RCN)
Portugal - Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT)
Turkey - Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBITAK)

Who can apply?

Applications may be submitted by: Academics, higher education institutions and / non-university research establishments. SMEs and industries are also eligible depending on the national regulations.

Only trans-national projects will be funded (2+1)

Each proposal must involve at least two eligible partners from  two different European  countries participating the call, as well as one partners from India.

French Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) will be funded by OSÉO but only in consortia already composed of at least two of the above mentioned European countries and India.

Beyond the core consortia of at least three partner research groups (2+1), scientists from non-funding countries may participate in projects if they secure their own funding. Their participation and their secured funding need to be confirmed through signing a Letter of Commitment uploaded as PDF with the full proposal application.

Applicants are strongly advised to discuss their intentions and confirm eligibility with their respective National Contact Points before submitting an applications.

Funding Instruments

Funding can be applied for multilateral research collaborative projects with duration of a maximum of three years. The amount of funding available per partner per project depends on national regulations of the respective participating funding organisations. You can download the respective national regulations for you country in the attachments section below.

According to the respective national regulations the following funding can be applied for:

  • Mobility
  • Workshops
  • Research costs
  • Personnel costs

The application procedure has one stage. Applications are submitted electronically using PT-Outline Web Tool.
